College Service Committees: Dr. Childress
serves on the Enrollment Management and Faculty Development committees. She
coordinates recruitment for the Music Department with Undergraduate
Admissions. She is available to all prospective music students
via e-mail or phone and is on campus for the Admissions Open House events.

About Me: Dr. Childress is the piano professor for the music department and teaches private and class piano, Keyboard Harmony, Fundamentals, Language of Music and American Music History. She co-teaches Opera/Music Theatre Workshop with Dr. Laura Greenwald and coordinates the Performance Class and Student Chamber Concerts. Dr. Childress is a soloist and chamber musician. This past June she worked as a vocal coach and pianist at the Idaho State University opera camp in Pocatello, Idaho. Upcoming performances include a chamber concert on Sunday, October 2 at 3:00 p.m. at the Union Congregation Church in Montclair. All the works to be performed were written by women and two works, commissioned by Dr. Childress, are being premiered. Dr. Childress serves as an adjudicator for piano competitions and events in the New Jersey and New York areas.
She lives in
Union, New Jersey with her husband Dr. Joseph Orchard, a cellist, musicologist
and singer of Gregorian chant. |

Specialized Areas: Dr. Childress specializes in performing the music of women composers. She will be presenting a lecture-recital on the music of Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel on Friday, November 11 at 10:00 a.m. for the Longlife Learning Institute of Caldwell College. She also has an extensive background in music theatre and opera and has worked in New York City with Broadway artists and directors. She has been music director and pianist for numerous regional and summer music theatre productions across the United States.
Dr. Childress has written music criticism for the Classical New
Jersey Society Journal and has published articles on music topics in two
encyclopedias including The Encyclopedia of New Jersey (Rutgers
University Press). | |
