In setting the context for Standard 10--Faculty, The Middle States Association makes the following stipulation:
"Whenever used in these standards, the term "faculty" shall be broadly construed to encompass qualified professionals such as third parties contracted by the institution, part-time faculty, adjuncts, and those assigned responsibilities in academic development and delivery. such professionals may include, as well, those responsible for the institution's academic information resources."
The Steering Committee has graciously left it to us to determine who, on this campus, falls under that description. Clearly, all varieties of faculty--half-time, adjunct, associate--are included. The critical question is "who else"? Two considerations: 1) We need to include all appropriate members of the staff about whom similar research is not being done under some other Standard by some other committee. Let's not duplicate someone else's work. 2) If in fact we indentify any non-faculty personnel who fit this description, it may be more challenging to answer the questions raised, as they are not governed by the policies in the Faculty Handbook. Therefore, we need to know this at the beginning of our work. It occurs to me that we may wish to consider the professional librarians and the professional tutors (assuming there are any) in the Academic Support Center. Aside from these, is anyone aware of anyone, perhaps someone connected to a specific department, who might qualify for consideration here?
