CS115 Introduction to Computer Based Systems

Course Objectives

1.      Learn the basic Concepts and skills in using a personal computer

2.      Learn to use the Windows Operating Systems

3.      Learn to Use the Microsoft Windows suite of applications

4.      Learn to Use internet and email applications

Course Description

The course is designed to teach basic information about personal computers, computer components, networks and the internet. In addition, students learn some common applications used in typical business environments. The course objective is for the student to achieve a level of competence in using computers that will meet future academic and business requirements.

 

Required Text Books and Materials

Microsoft Office 2003  - Premium Edition by Beskeen, Cram,Duffy,Friedrichsen, Reding, 2008 by Course Technology, ISBN 1-4188-6039-5

In addition, supplemental reading materials will be assigned. They will be posted on the Professor’s web site and the course Blackboard site.

Primary Course Requirements:

 

  1. Access to a computer using Windows XP or 2000, using Windows Office Applications (WORD, Excel, PowerPoint and Access).
  2. Access to the Internet in order to use the Caldwell College Blackboard System and the Professor’s web site. You will need to obtain and use a college NetID account.
  3. Your College email account and the ability to use email to send and receive messages and attachments. NetID and College email accounts can be obtained in room 4205.

 

Assignments may be submitted using one of the following methods:

 

  1. Using Blackboard’s “Digital Drop Box”,
  2. Using email to send your assignment to the Professor
  3. Sent (Postal Mail) or Delivered to the Professor’s mail box (or office) on a floppy diskette, compatible CD-ROMS , zip disks or flash drives. (These will be mailed back to you after the project is graded.)

 

Assignments, announcements and course materials will require to internet access to use Blackboard and Professor Toffler’s web site. In addition, Blackboard will be used to present and administer exams.

 

The course will require that you complete four projects. Completed assignments may be emailed or delivered to the instructor’s office by the due date. Points (10 per week) will be deducted from the grade for late assignments. Assignments will not be accepted if they are received more than two weeks after the due date!

 

The assignments must be completed using Microsoft Office Applications. Other similar applications (“WORKS”, WordPerfect, etc.) will not be accepted.

 

In addition, there will be a mid-term exam and a final exam (12/14/2008, 12 noon). Exams will be given using Blackboard. You will be given additional instructions regarding each exam on Blackboard, including the date range during which you will able to take the exam.

Course Schedule

It is important to complete the assignments and reading. The assignments and exams will be based upon the reading materials. It is the responsibility of each student to learn the material before attempting the assignments. Class materials, including assignments and class presentations will be on Professor Toffler’s Blackboard and college web site. You will be provided with additional instructions regarding the use of the Blackboard System. The Web Site is linked to the faculty listing on the Caldwell College web site or directly accessible as http://faculty.caldwell.edu/atoffler/. Questions regarding the course materials can be emailed to Professor Toffler. In addition, students may call the Professor or meet during office hours.  Students may arrange appointments at other times if the designated office hours are inconvenient. The course textbook is called “MS Office” in the table below.

Policies and Additional Information

All Caldwell College policies and procedures regarding class attendance, behavior, academic integrity, including all remedies and penalties will be followed exactly. Please read and follow all rules as set forth in the "Academic Integrity Policy."

Exams are constructed primarily from a pool of questions supplied by the textbook publisher and questions that the instructor devises. Questions are selected based on the importance of the topic. The grade for assignments submitted late will be decreased by ten points for every week or part of week that it is late.

 

If you are absent, you are responsible for all class notes and projects that you have missed. If you are absent more than five times for any reason besides extended illness during the semester, your grade will be reduced by one complete letter grade. Any extended illness must be verified with the Assistant Dean’s office.

 

Each Computer Lab has a schedule of hours posted on the door or in the room. Please feel free to use computers in any lab during the scheduled hours.
