Gardiner's
Atlas of English History
- The maps included in this web site are from the
book A School Atlas of English History, ed. by Samuel Rawson
Gardiner, M.A. LL.D., printed in London by Longmans, Green, and Co. in
1892. They present a comprehensive picture of Great Britain during the
period we are studying and beyond it to the late nineteenth century.
Well worth a visit. A good alternative to the next site, which is
presently unavailable.

Historical Atlas of England
- (The full site is presently unavailable, but worthwhile if and
when it can be located.) Includes a map of "the first home of the English," which shows the continental origins of the Germanic tribes that settled Britain. This is useful for developing a sense of the language and cultural history generally and the environment of Beowulf in particular. With this are maps of England through the OE period and the early Norman period, some interesting images of historic artifacts, and some suggested readings.
Some individual maps and one collection can be found at the following links:

Internet Medieval Sourcebook: Maps and Images
- Scroll down (and down!) to "England/British Isles." There is a map of the Angevin Empire, the holdings of the 12thC Norman kings of England, and other maps of medieval England, including one of medieval England about the time of Chaucer's death.
